Samsung Electronics has overtaken NVIDIA as the world’s most profitable tech company, posting a record Q2 operating profit of 89.4 trillion won ($58.6 billion). Driven by soaring AI memory chip demand, revenue hit 171 trillion won. Despite the milestone, shares fell 7% amid investor concerns over sustainability and volatility.

Samsung Electronics has surged past NVIDIA to become the world’s most profitable technology company, reporting a record quarterly operating profit of 89.4 trillion won ($58.6 billion) in Q2 2026. The 1,810% year-on-year leap was fuelled by unprecedented demand for AI memory chips, driving revenue to an all-time high of 171 trillion won.

This milestone marks a significant shift in the AI boom, as profitability moves from AI processor makers to memory chip manufacturers. Samsung’s Q2 operating profit now eclipses NVIDIA’s previous record of $53.5 billion, positioning the South Korean giant to potentially achieve full-year profits of $217 billion—greater than its cumulative earnings over the past four decades.

The extraordinary performance underscores Samsung’s dominance in the semiconductor industry, where AI-driven demand for advanced memory solutions has reshaped the competitive landscape. Analysts note that the company’s ability to capitalise on this trend has redefined the balance of power in global technology markets, signalling a new era where memory innovation drives profitability.

Yet, despite the historic achievement, investor sentiment proved cautious. Samsung shares fell as much as 7% in early trading on the South Korean stock exchange, reflecting concerns over sustainability, market volatility, and the cyclical nature of the semiconductor sector. The sharp decline highlights the tension between record-breaking financial results and investor apprehension about long-term stability.

Samsung’s triumph over NVIDIA is more than a financial headline—it is a turning point in the AI revolution. As demand for memory chips accelerates, the company’s performance suggests that the next phase of technological growth may be defined not by processors alone, but by the infrastructure that enables AI systems to scale.

France was named Creative Country of the Year at the 2026 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, with President Emmanuel Macron delivering a video address celebrating the nation’s cultural and creative strength. Macron highlighted reforms, investment, and innovation as drivers of France’s global appeal, while industry leaders praised its creative ecosystem.

France closed the 73rd Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity with a moment of national pride as it was awarded the 2026 Creative Country of the Year accolade. The honour, bestowed annually, recognises a nation’s enduring commitment to creativity as a force for progress and growth.

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed delegates via video on Friday evening, thanking the festival for recognising “our French creativity today”. He described creativity as a national philosophy, flowing through fashion, luxury, and culture, and extending to industries from video games to cinema. “French creativity is our ability to combine formal, regal, and poetic, even irreverent, perspective,” he said, adding that the award reflected France’s attractiveness to talent, industries, and capital.

Macron attributed this appeal to deliberate reforms, including labour changes, regulatory simplification, and major investments in innovation. He noted that France has been ranked Europe’s most attractive country for foreign investment for seven consecutive years. He also referenced recent financial boosts, including €350 million for film production under the France 2030 project and €93 billion pledged by foreign companies at the Choose France summit, particularly in AI and data.

The President concluded by inviting attendees to the Lumiere Summit on 7 September at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, co-chaired by France and South Korea. The summit will celebrate cinema, series, and video games, reinforcing France’s role as a hub for creative industries. “Long live creativity, long live the Republic, and long live France,” Macron declared.

Industry leaders echoed the sentiment. David Leclabart, President of AUSTRALIEGAD and Co-President of the AACC, hailed the award as historic, noting it was the first time France had been named Creative Country of the Year. “The French touch is a universal language,” he said, emphasising creativity’s power to inspire and connect across cultures.

Tiphaine du Plessis, President of BETC FULLSIX and Co-President of the AACC, described creativity as one of France’s greatest strategic assets, driving innovation, competitiveness, and soft power. “Creativity is business. Creativity is change,” she said, stressing its role in sustainability, inclusion, and societal progress. She added that as AI transforms the industry, France remains committed to combining technological innovation with human creativity and cultural vision.

The recognition capped a decade of creative excellence and underscored France’s position as a global leader in creativity, with its cultural and creative industries continuing to shape the future.

The White Square International Festival of Creativity has announced its 2026 winners, spotlighting projects that are shaping the future of marketing, branding, advertising, and communications worldwide. With 1,115 entries from 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, MENA, Asia, and Africa, the Festival reaffirmed its role as a global platform for creative excellence and exchange.

White Square 2026 became a meeting ground for ideas that challenge conventions and redefine creative standards.

Eight international juries — spanning Branding, Marketing & Digital, Creative, Craft, Media, Mass Media, Clients, and the Grand Jury — evaluated submissions with rigorous analysis and debate. The jurors, representing more than 45 countries and including award-winning practitioners from leading global festivals, assessed entries on creative ideas, execution, and effectiveness. Each jury selected a Best of Contest, from which the Grand Jury chose the Grand Prix of White Square 2026.

Sentosa is set to sparkle this summer as it embarks on its most ambitious transformation yet, teaming up with Disney Cruise Line to deliver a large-scale immersive adventure across the island. Running from 24 June to 20 September, “A magical island adventure: Let’s set sail with Disney Cruise Line” will reimagine Sentosa’s beaches, attractions and landmarks through the lens of Disney storytelling.

Inspired by the seven themed areas of the Disney Adventure cruise ship, the activation will span multiple locations including Sensoryscape, Central Beach Bazaar, Palawan Beach, The Palawan, the Singapore Cable Car – Sentosa Line and the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia. Visitors can explore zones themed after Disney Imagination Garden, Disney Discovery Reef, Town Square, Wayfinder Bay, San Fransokyo Street, Toy Story Place and Marvel Landing.

The experience is designed to evolve throughout the day, with interactive installations and illuminated features coming alive after sunset. A key highlight is the Southernmost Point of Continental Asia, which will remain open until 10pm for the first time. Transformed into a glowing coastal escape, it will feature bioluminescent-inspired lighting, illuminated manta rays and nods to beloved Disney and Pixar titles including Finding Nemo, The Little Mermaid, Lilo & Stitch and Moana.

This collaboration marks the first time Sentosa has staged an island-wide transformation of such scale, weaving Disney’s storytelling magic into Singapore’s iconic leisure destination. By day, families can enjoy themed trails and playful encounters; by night, the island will shimmer with coastal lightscapes and interactive wonder, offering a seamless blend of entertainment, nostalgia and discovery.

Cannes Lions 2026 celebrated craft excellence with Grand Prix wins for Google’s “Project Genie”, Coinbase’s “Your Way Out”, and De’Longhi’s “Tiny Coffee Shops”. Oprah Winfrey received the LionHeart Award for her global impact. The festival highlighted creativity across Digital, Film and Industry Craft while honouring cultural influence beyond advertising.

The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity once again demonstrated its ability to spotlight the finest achievements in craft, while also honouring cultural icons whose influence transcends advertising. This year’s awards revealed a balance between technical mastery and human resonance, with Grand Prix winners in Digital, Film and Industry Craft categories, alongside the prestigious LionHeart Award presented to Oprah Winfrey.

Digital Craft attracted 355 entries, with 11 Lions awarded: 2 Gold, 3 Silver and 5 Bronze. The Grand Prix went to “Project Genie”, created for Google by Google, Mountain View. The work stood out for its seamless blend of innovation and empathy, reflecting how digital tools can be harnessed to empower creativity and solve real-world challenges. It was a reminder that craft in the digital space is not only about technical brilliance but also about human-centred design.

Film Craft, traditionally one of the festival’s most competitive categories, received 1,433 entries. From these, 43 Lions were awarded: 6 Gold, 15 Silver and 21 Bronze. The Grand Prix was awarded to “Your Way Out”, for Coinbase, by Isle of Any, New York. Film Craft Jury President Pip Smart, Executive Producer and Partner at Revolver, Australia, explained the jury’s decision: “‘Your Way Out’ was the film that organically rose to the top as we worked through the judging process… eventually it was hard to argue for any other piece for the Grand Prix.” The film’s narrative strength and cinematic execution resonated deeply with the jury, underscoring the enduring power of storytelling in an era dominated by digital formats.

Industry Craft, with 649 entries, produced 18 Lions: 2 Gold, 5 Silver and 10 Bronze. The Grand Prix was awarded to “Tiny Coffee Shops” for De’Longhi, by LOLA, Madrid. This campaign exemplified how craft can elevate brand identity by celebrating everyday rituals. Through meticulous attention to detail and a warm, human touch, the work highlighted the intimacy of coffee culture while reinforcing De’Longhi’s positioning as a brand that values both tradition and innovation.

Beyond the competitive categories, the festival also honoured a figure whose influence extends far beyond the creative industries. Oprah Winfrey was presented with the Cannes LionHeart Award, recognising her as a global media leader, producer, philanthropist and actress who has harnessed her platform to make a meaningful and lasting impact on the world. Her recognition underscored the festival’s commitment to celebrating not only creative excellence but also cultural leadership and social responsibility.

Together, these awards painted a vivid picture of contemporary creativity: one that values craft, innovation and storytelling, while also acknowledging the broader cultural and social impact of influential voices. Cannes Lions 2026 reaffirmed its role as a global stage where artistry, commerce and conscience converge, reminding the industry that creativity is most powerful when it connects with humanity.

Meta will invest ₹8,550 crore ($900 million) in CRED at a $4.5 billion valuation, marking one of India’s largest fintech deals. Founder Kunal Shah transitions to Meta as WhatsApp’s new head, while Miten Sampat becomes interim CEO, steering CRED towards its next growth phase and potential IPO.

Meta has announced a landmark investment of ₹8,550 crore ($900 million) in Indian fintech unicorn CRED, valuing the company at $4.5 billion. The deal represents one of the largest capital infusions into India’s fintech sector and underscores Meta’s growing commitment to deepening its presence in the country’s digital economy.

Alongside the investment, CRED founder Kunal Shah will transition to Meta as the new head of WhatsApp, succeeding Will Cathcart, who is moving into another role within the company. Shah’s appointment signals Meta’s intent to strengthen WhatsApp’s leadership in India, its largest market, where the platform is increasingly central to digital payments, commerce, and community engagement.

Founded in 2018, CRED has rapidly evolved into one of India’s most influential fintech platforms. With 1.7 crore members, the company processes over 40% of India’s credit card bill payments and manages lending assets under management (AUM) exceeding ₹24,000 crore. Its growth trajectory has positioned it as a key player in India’s financial services ecosystem, blending technology, trust, and consumer-centric innovation.

As Shah steps away from day-to-day operations, Miten Sampat will assume the role of interim CEO, guiding CRED through its next chapter. The company is expected to sharpen its focus on scaling operations, diversifying offerings, and preparing for a potential initial public offering (IPO). Sampat’s leadership will be critical in sustaining momentum while ensuring continuity in CRED’s ambitious roadmap.

Industry observers view Meta’s investment as a strategic move that aligns with its broader vision of integrating financial services into its platforms. By partnering with CRED, Meta gains access to a robust fintech infrastructure and a loyal user base, while CRED benefits from Meta’s global reach and technological capabilities. The collaboration could accelerate innovation in digital payments and lending, reinforcing India’s position as a hub for fintech advancement.

The dual development—Meta’s investment in CRED and Shah’s elevation to WhatsApp leadership—marks a significant moment in India’s digital and financial landscape. It reflects the convergence of technology, finance, and consumer engagement, with both companies poised to shape the future of digital transactions and communication in the region.

Apple executive Eddy Cue will receive the 2026 Entertainment Person of the Year award at Cannes Lions, recognising his role in transforming entertainment through innovation and storytelling. The honour highlights Apple’s growing influence across streaming, music, sports and digital services, as well as its continued success in creative marketing.

The relationship between technology and entertainment has never been closer, and few executives have done more to shape that convergence than Eddy Cue. The long-serving Apple executive, whose influence stretches across streaming television, music, podcasts, publishing, payments and digital services, is set to receive one of the entertainment industry’s most prestigious recognitions when Cannes Lions honours him as its 2026 Entertainment Person of the Year.

The announcement marks another significant milestone in a career that has helped redefine how audiences discover, consume and engage with content in the digital age. Presented annually by Cannes Lions, the award celebrates individuals whose creativity, leadership and vision have made a profound impact on the entertainment landscape and inspired others to create compelling and meaningful content.

As Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services and Health, Cue oversees a vast portfolio of products and platforms that collectively reach hundreds of millions of users around the world. His responsibilities span Apple TV, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, Apple News, Apple Pay, Fitness+, Apple Card, Apple Maps, iCloud and Apple’s suite of productivity and creativity applications. While each of these services serves a distinct purpose, together they represent a broader strategy that has transformed Apple from a hardware company into one of the world’s most influential entertainment and services businesses.

The Cannes Lions recognition comes at a time when Apple’s entertainment ambitions are yielding remarkable results. Perhaps the most visible symbol of that success is Apple TV+, the company’s streaming platform, which launched slightly more than six years ago with an ambitious vision: to focus entirely on original programming rather than building a vast catalogue of licensed content.

The strategy initially attracted scepticism in an intensely competitive streaming market dominated by established giants. Yet Apple’s commitment to quality over quantity has gradually reshaped perceptions. Under Cue’s leadership, Apple TV+ has become one of the industry’s most acclaimed streaming services, earning praise from critics, creators and audiences alike.

For five consecutive years, the platform has maintained the highest critically rated slate of original programming among all streaming services, an achievement that reflects both the strength of its creative partnerships and its disciplined approach to commissioning content. Rather than chasing volume, Apple has concentrated on attracting top-tier storytellers and investing heavily in projects capable of generating lasting cultural impact.

That strategy has produced a string of influential programmes. The comedy-drama Ted Lasso became a global phenomenon, earning widespread acclaim for its optimism, humour and emotional depth. Severance emerged as one of television’s most discussed dramas, praised for its originality and visual style, eventually becoming the most Emmy-awarded drama series of the previous year. More recently, The Studio achieved a remarkable distinction by becoming the most-awarded freshman comedy series in television history.

Apple’s ambitions have also extended to cinema. Through Apple Original Films, the company has demonstrated its ability to compete with established Hollywood studios. The blockbuster F1, which won an Academy Award and shattered box-office records, became the highest-grossing sports film ever released, illustrating how Apple’s entertainment strategy has expanded beyond streaming into mainstream theatrical success.

These achievements have contributed to Apple’s growing reputation as a cultural force. Earlier this year, TIME recognised the company as one of the world’s most influential entertainment organisations, citing its impact on storytelling, innovation and culture. The designation reflected a broader industry consensus that Apple is no longer merely participating in entertainment but actively helping to shape its future.

The numbers behind Apple’s creative achievements are equally striking. The company’s entertainment productions have accumulated more than 800 awards and over 3,500 nominations. Such recognition is particularly notable given the relatively short lifespan of Apple’s original content operation compared with many of its competitors.

Yet Cue’s influence extends far beyond television and film. Apple Music remains one of the company’s most strategically important services, connecting artists and listeners across the globe. The platform recently achieved record levels of listenership and subscriber growth, reinforcing its position as a major player in the global music industry.

Meanwhile, Apple’s expanding sports portfolio has become another significant pillar of its entertainment strategy. The company has secured exclusive broadcasting partnerships and landmark agreements that reflect changing patterns in sports consumption. Among the most notable is its exclusive United States broadcast partnership with Formula 1, a sport experiencing rapid international growth and attracting new audiences through digital engagement and storytelling.

Apple has also strengthened its presence in football through a partnership with Major League Soccer and expanded its baseball offerings through Friday Night Baseball. These initiatives demonstrate a broader vision in which technology, live sports and entertainment increasingly intersect, creating new experiences for fans while opening fresh commercial opportunities for leagues and rights holders.

For Cannes Lions, the decision to honour Cue reflects not only Apple’s commercial achievements but also its broader influence on culture and creativity. Simon Cook, Chief Executive Officer of LIONS, described Cue as a leader who has consistently pushed the boundaries of storytelling and entertainment.

According to Cook, Cue has built platforms and experiences that have fundamentally changed how audiences interact with culture. He highlighted Apple’s ability to combine world-class content with technological innovation, creativity and a relentless commitment to quality, qualities that have helped define the company’s entertainment strategy over the past decade.

The recognition also arrives during a period of exceptional success for Apple at Cannes Lions itself. In 2025, the company was named Creative Marketer of the Year, one of the festival’s highest honours. The award recognised Apple’s long-standing ability to create marketing campaigns that resonate deeply with audiences while delivering measurable business results.

Among the company’s most celebrated achievements was the Creative Effectiveness Grand Prix for the iconic Shot on iPhone campaign. The initiative transformed ordinary smartphone users into creative ambassadors while simultaneously demonstrating the capabilities of Apple’s technology. It remains one of the most influential marketing campaigns of the digital era.

Other acclaimed campaigns, including Relax: Tractor, The Underdogs: Swiped Mac, TED LASSO: Fake Team. Real Partners. and Fuzzy Feelings, further illustrate Apple’s commitment to storytelling across advertising and branded content. These campaigns have blurred the traditional boundaries between marketing and entertainment, creating narratives that engage audiences in ways that feel authentic and culturally relevant.

Such achievements underscore a broader shift within the communications industry. Increasingly, brands are expected not simply to advertise but to entertain, inspire and create meaningful connections with audiences. In this environment, companies capable of producing compelling stories often enjoy a competitive advantage.

Apple’s success in this area reflects a philosophy that has become central to its identity. Whether through films, television programmes, music experiences, sports partnerships or advertising campaigns, the company has consistently sought to place storytelling at the heart of its relationship with consumers.

Cue’s career offers a powerful example of how leadership can shape that vision. Over the years, he has helped guide Apple through multiple technological transformations, from the rise of digital music and mobile applications to the streaming revolution and the emergence of integrated service ecosystems. His ability to anticipate changes in consumer behaviour and align Apple’s offerings accordingly has played a significant role in the company’s evolution.

The award ceremony itself will provide another opportunity for industry leaders to hear directly from one of the most influential figures in modern entertainment. Before receiving the honour, Cue will take part in a keynote seminar at the Lumière Theatre on 22 June alongside legendary Hollywood producer Jerry Bruckheimer. The discussion is expected to explore the evolving relationship between technology, storytelling and audience engagement.

Their conversation is likely to attract considerable attention from marketers, media executives, filmmakers and technology leaders attending Cannes Lions. As entertainment continues to evolve at a rapid pace, insights from figures who have successfully navigated that transformation are increasingly valuable.

The honour bestowed on Cue ultimately reflects more than individual achievement. It highlights the growing influence of technology companies in shaping global culture and underscores the importance of storytelling in an era defined by digital experiences. From award-winning television series and blockbuster films to music streaming, live sports and creative marketing, Apple’s entertainment ecosystem has become a powerful force in the modern media landscape.

As Cannes Lions prepares to celebrate Eddy Cue’s contributions, the award serves as recognition of a broader transformation that has reshaped the entertainment industry itself. In a world where the lines between technology, media and culture continue to blur, Cue’s career stands as a reminder that innovation is often most powerful when it is combined with great storytelling.

Coca-Cola’s World Cup 2026 campaign, “Poetics of Design,” builds on the Arden Square to create a flexible grid system. Forty-eight collectible cans balance global identity with local resonance. By prioritising structure over spectacle, the design achieves longevity, proving that disciplined systems can outlast the fleeting noise of tournament branding.

In the world of FIFA World Cup branding, campaigns often blur into the background. They are everywhere, yet rarely distinctive—visual wallpaper that fills space without leaving a mark. For 2026, The Coca-Cola Company has chosen a strikingly different approach. Their campaign, “Poetics of Design – Design Playing the Beautiful Game,” is not built on a fleeting look but on a system, one that transforms design into a language of structure and meaning.

At its heart lies the Arden Square, a familiar element of Coca-Cola’s brand identity. From this single square emerges a grid that can shift and adapt, becoming a football pitch, a national flag, a crowd in motion, or even a tactical formation. This modular system allows Coca-Cola to produce 48 collectible cans, each representing a participating nation. Every can unmistakably carries the Coca-Cola identity, yet simultaneously reflects something culturally specific. Achieving this duality—global consistency with local resonance—is a design feat that is harder to pull off than it sounds.

The brilliance of the system lies in its discipline. The grid remains constant, while colours, patterns, and references change. This consistency avoids the need for loud declarations of local relevance. The design simply embodies it. Whether seen in a corner shop or scaled up into a stadium installation, the visual language feels authentic, adaptable, and deeply connected to the occasion.

This is where Coca-Cola’s campaign diverges from the norm. Most World Cup designs are tied too tightly to the tournament itself, their relevance evaporating once the final whistle blows. They are clever in the moment but lack longevity. Coca-Cola’s system, however, is built on something more enduring. A strong structure does not age; it remains flexible enough to accommodate new contexts. The World Cup may pass, but the design framework continues to hold meaning.

By resisting the temptation to chase novelty for its own sake, Coca-Cola has created a campaign that feels both fresh and timeless. It is not about shouting louder than competitors or flooding the market with generic imagery. Instead, it is about trusting the power of design systems to carry cultural weight. In doing so, Coca-Cola has turned a global sporting event into a canvas for design poetry—where every square, every grid, and every can tells a story that is both universal and particular.

The result is a campaign that does more than decorate the World Cup. It plays the beautiful game in its own right, showing how design can be as strategic, as disciplined, and as expressive as football itself.
